Wootton Street Area

Compact Victorian residential streets between the High Street and Cosham Park

A compact residential area west of the High Street, taking its character from Wootton Street and the surrounding roads. The housing here is a mix of Victorian terraces and early twentieth century properties, with some postwar rebuilding where war damage required replacement. Wootton Street runs parallel to the High Street and acts as a secondary route through the district. The area is within easy walking distance of both the High Street shops and Cosham Park, making it a convenient and well-connected part of the district. Some of the properties along Wootton Street have been converted to flats, reflecting the demand for smaller, more affordable accommodation in this part of Portsmouth. The streets are relatively narrow, with on-street parking on both sides leaving limited space for passing traffic. Despite the density, the area has a neighbourly atmosphere, and several of the corner properties retain their original Victorian architectural details including decorative brickwork and tiled paths.
