Fort Southwick

Historic Site, Cosham

A Palmerston fort built in the 1860s on the crest of Portsdown Hill. During the Second World War, the underground tunnels at Fort Southwick served as the headquarters for the naval planning of D-Day. Admiral Ramsay directed Operation Neptune from the plotting rooms here. The fort is periodically open for guided tours through the Royal Armouries.
