Fort Widley

Historic Site, Cosham

The largest of the Palmerston forts on Portsdown Hill, built in the 1860s to defend Portsmouth from landward attack. The fort has thick brick walls, underground magazines and a commanding position overlooking the city. It has been used for various purposes since decommissioning and is now managed by Portsmouth City Council. Parts of the fort are open for events and activities.
