Cafes in Cosham

Coffee shops and daytime eateries in the district

Cosham's cafe scene is practical rather than trendy, reflecting the character of a working suburban district. The High Street has several cafes offering hot drinks, breakfasts, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and light lunches at affordable prices. These are well used by shoppers, pensioners and workers on their breaks, particularly during weekday mornings when the pedestrianised High Street is at its busiest.

The independent cafes along the High Street tend to serve traditional British cafe fare: full English breakfasts, bacon rolls, mugs of tea and filter coffee. Prices are lower than in the more fashionable parts of Portsmouth, and the portions are generous. These are not specialty coffee shops with single-origin beans and oat milk on tap, but they serve their community well and have a loyal clientele who return daily.

The supermarket cafes at Tesco Extra and Asda also provide a no-frills option for a coffee and a snack while shopping. These are particularly popular with families and older shoppers who combine a trip to the supermarket with a sit-down drink and a bite to eat.

For specialty coffee and a more contemporary cafe experience, Cosham residents generally head to Southsea, where Albert Road and the surrounding streets have a thriving independent cafe culture. The contrast between the two areas is marked. Southsea's cafes tend towards specialty coffee, brunch menus and Instagram-friendly interiors, while Cosham's cafes are more straightforward and community orientated.

Cosham Library on the High Street also provides a quiet spot to sit with a book, and some community venues in the area serve refreshments during events and group sessions. The Cosham Community Centre and Cosham Baptist Church both host coffee mornings that serve as social gatherings for local residents, particularly older people who value the company as much as the coffee.
