Restaurants in Cosham

Where to eat out in Portsmouth's northern gateway

Cosham is not a dining destination in the way that Southsea or Gunwharf Quays are, but it has a reasonable selection of places to eat for a district of its size. The options are concentrated around the High Street and the surrounding roads, with a few more scattered along Havant Road and Northern Road.

The High Street has several cafes and casual eateries offering breakfasts, lunches and light meals during the day. There are independent cafes alongside the usual high street names. For something more substantial, the takeaways and restaurants along the High Street and the side streets provide Indian, Chinese, Turkish and traditional British food. Most are independently run, and the quality is variable but the best places have built up loyal local followings.

The George on Portsdown Hill Road is the standout dining option in the wider Cosham area. Perched on the slopes of Portsdown Hill with views across the harbour and the city, The George serves pub food in a setting that is hard to beat anywhere on the south coast. On a clear evening, the terrace offers views from the Spinnaker Tower to the Isle of Wight. Sunday lunch here is popular and booking is advisable, particularly during the warmer months when the terrace is in demand.

For a wider choice of restaurants, Cosham residents typically head into Portsmouth city centre, Southsea or across to Fareham. Southsea's Osborne Road and Albert Road have strong independent dining scenes, and Gunwharf Quays has waterfront chains. Fareham town centre has a mix of chains and independents. All are within a short drive or bus ride from Cosham.

Delivery apps have broadened the choice available to Cosham residents. Restaurants from across Portsmouth and Fareham now deliver to PO6 postcodes, bringing Thai, Japanese, Caribbean, Mediterranean and other cuisines to the doorstep without leaving home. But for a meal out with a view, The George remains the local favourite.
