A27 Cosham Bypass
1970s
The construction of the A27 bypass through Cosham in the 1970s diverted through traffic away from the High Street, which had previously been choked with vehicles heading between Portsmouth and the mainland. The bypass runs to the south of the town centre, carrying traffic between the A3 interchange and the Portchester Road. While the bypass relieved congestion in the centre, it also created a physical barrier between Cosham and the areas to the south, and the noise and visual impact of the busy road affected nearby streets.
