First World War

1914-1918

During the First World War, Cosham's proximity to Portsmouth dockyard meant that many local men worked in the naval shipyards producing warships and munitions. Others enlisted and served overseas. The war brought full employment to the district, with the dockyard working at maximum capacity. The war memorial in Cosham records the names of local men who did not return. The community, like all communities in the Portsmouth area, was deeply affected by the conflict.
