Medieval Village Life
1200-1500
Through the medieval period, Cosham remained a small agricultural village on the road between mainland Hampshire and the growing town of Portsmouth on Portsea Island. The village served as a stopping point for travellers crossing the marshy ground between the hill and the island. A few farms worked the land around the village, and the community was closely tied to the seasonal rhythms of agriculture. The church at Wymering served the spiritual needs of the scattered local population.
