Buying Property in Cosham

A guide to the local housing market

Cosham offers some of the more affordable property in the Portsmouth area, making it popular with first-time buyers, young families and investors. The housing stock is varied, ranging from Victorian terraces in the centre to interwar semis near the park and towards Portsdown Hill, postwar council-built estates and more spacious properties in Drayton.

Victorian terraced houses in central Cosham are among the cheapest properties in the city. Two-bedroom terraces with bay windows and small gardens are available at prices significantly below comparable properties in Southsea or Old Portsmouth. These houses appeal to first-time buyers and to investors building a rental portfolio. The properties are generally well built but may need updating, and issues such as damp, outdated wiring and single-glazed windows are common in the older stock.

Interwar semi-detached houses in the Cosham Park area, along Northern Road and in Drayton are more spacious and slightly more expensive. Three-bedroom semis with front and rear gardens, driveways and garages are available at moderate prices. These properties appeal to families who need more space than a terraced house can offer.

Properties on the higher ground towards Portsdown Hill, particularly those with views, command a premium. The combination of elevation, views and larger plots makes these some of the most desirable homes in the Cosham area. Detached houses with panoramic views across the harbour can sell for significantly more than comparable properties in the flat streets below.

The proximity of QA Hospital drives demand from NHS staff looking for affordable housing within easy commuting distance of work. The railway station and the A27/A3 interchange make Cosham attractive to commuters heading to Portsmouth city centre, Fareham or Southampton.

Mortgage affordability and deposit requirements are the main barriers for first-time buyers. Government schemes including Help to Buy and shared ownership may be available for some new-build properties in the area.
