Community Groups in Cosham

Local organisations and clubs

Cosham has an active community sector, with groups and organisations covering everything from social clubs and support networks to sports, hobbies and local campaigning. The community groups reflect the diverse population of the district and provide social connection for residents of all ages.

Cosham Community Centre on Wootton Street is one of the main venues for community activities, hosting clubs, classes, meetings and events. The centre provides affordable room hire and is used by a wide range of groups. Activities include fitness classes, craft groups, social gatherings, committee meetings and private functions.

Cosham Baptist Church and St Philip's Church both run community activities that are open to people of all faiths and none. Coffee mornings, parent and toddler groups, lunch clubs for older people and youth groups all operate from church premises. These activities provide social contact and support, particularly for older residents who may be isolated.

The Wymering Manor Trust is a local group dedicated to preserving and restoring Wymering Manor, the oldest building in Portsmouth. The trust campaigns for the building's future and organises events and open days to raise awareness of its significance.

Sports clubs in the area include football teams, cricket clubs, bowling clubs and running groups. The Cosham Bowling Club operates from Cosham Park and welcomes new members. Local football teams use the pitches at King George V Playing Fields and other grounds in the area.

Residents' associations and neighbourhood groups operate in parts of Cosham, providing a voice for local concerns on issues such as parking, planning applications, antisocial behaviour and community safety. These groups liaise with Portsmouth City Council and with local ward councillors.

Voluntary organisations including food banks, befriending schemes and advice services also operate in the area, providing practical support for residents experiencing hardship.
