Fitness and Exercise in Cosham

Gyms, sports and staying active locally

Cosham offers a reasonable range of options for staying fit, combining commercial gyms and leisure facilities with the natural asset of Portsdown Hill. The district is better served for outdoor exercise than many parts of Portsmouth, thanks to the hill, the parks and the proximity to the countryside.

Portsdown Hill is the outstanding fitness resource in the area. The steep climb from central Cosham to the ridge provides a challenging workout, and the paths along the crest offer miles of running and walking with panoramic views. Hill sprints, interval training and long steady runs are all popular on the hill, and on any given morning you will see joggers, runners and walkers working their way up the slopes. The chalk paths are generally well drained and usable in most weather conditions.

Cosham Park and King George V Playing Fields provide flat, open spaces for running, football, cricket and informal sports. The parks have some basic outdoor fitness equipment and are well used by dog walkers, joggers and families.

Commercial gyms in and around Cosham offer weights, cardio equipment, classes and personal training. Some operate on a no-contract, pay-as-you-go basis, while others require monthly memberships. The larger gyms have swimming pools, saunas and a full programme of group fitness classes including spin, yoga, Pilates, HIIT and body pump.

Portsmouth City Council operates leisure centres across the city, and the Mountbatten Centre provides swimming, gym facilities and sports halls. While not in Cosham itself, the council's facilities are accessible to all Portsmouth residents.

Local running clubs organise group runs from various points in the area, including sessions on Portsdown Hill. Parkrun events are held at various locations around Portsmouth, providing a free, timed 5km run every Saturday morning.
