Parks in Cosham

Public green spaces and recreation grounds

Cosham has two main parks serving the district: Cosham Park and King George V Playing Fields. Between them, they provide the essential green space, play areas, sports pitches and informal recreation that a densely built residential area needs.

Cosham Park is the smaller of the two but is more centrally located, sitting within easy walking distance of the High Street and the surrounding residential streets. The park has a children's playground with modern equipment, a bowling green used by Cosham Bowling Club, tennis courts and open grass for informal games and dog walking. Mature trees around the boundaries provide shade and shelter, and benches are dotted around the paths for those who want to sit and enjoy the green space. The park is well maintained by Portsmouth City Council and is a valued community asset.

King George V Playing Fields, on the boundary between Cosham and Drayton, is a larger open space with sports pitches for football and cricket. The playing fields have a more spacious, open character than Cosham Park, and they provide room for running, kite-flying and other activities that need space. A children's play area serves the surrounding residential streets. The playing fields are heavily used at weekends when organised sport takes over the pitches.

Portsdown Hill, while not a park in the formal sense, functions as an informal green space for Cosham residents. The chalk grassland on the ridge provides open access land for walking, running, picnicking and enjoying the views. It is the single most important outdoor resource for the district.

Smaller green spaces and patches of open land are scattered through the residential areas. These include grassed areas within housing estates, small recreation grounds and verges. While individually modest, they contribute to the overall greenness of the district.

Portsmouth is one of the most densely populated cities in England outside London, and green space is at a premium. The parks and open spaces in Cosham are all the more valued because of this scarcity.
