Local Events in Cosham

What's on in the district and nearby

Cosham hosts a modest programme of local events throughout the year, supplemented by the much larger events calendar in Portsmouth and the wider Solent area. The events reflect the community character of the district, with church fetes, community fairs, charity sales and seasonal celebrations forming the backbone of the local calendar.

Community events are typically organised by churches, community groups, schools and local organisations. Cosham Baptist Church and St Philip's Church both hold seasonal events including Christmas fairs, Easter events and harvest celebrations. The Cosham Community Centre hosts jumble sales, craft fairs and community gatherings. Schools in the area hold summer fetes, Christmas performances and fundraising events.

The High Street occasionally hosts market events and promotions designed to draw shoppers and support local traders. These events bring a bit of life to the pedestrianised street and are generally well received by the community.

Portsdown Hill is the venue for informal events including organised walks, conservation volunteering days and historical talks. Fort Widley and Fort Southwick hold occasional open days, allowing visitors to explore the Victorian fortifications and learn about their history, including the D-Day connection at Fort Southwick.

For larger events, Portsmouth city centre and Southsea have a full programme of festivals, concerts, sports events and cultural activities. The Great South Run, Victorious Festival, Portsmouth International Kite Festival and the Southsea Food Festival are among the major events that draw visitors from across the region.

Bonfire Night firework displays are held at various locations around Portsmouth, and Cosham residents can watch displays from the vantage point of Portsdown Hill, which offers a panoramic view of fireworks going off across the city, the harbour and Gosport.

Community noticeboards on the High Street, in the library and in community venues display details of upcoming local events.
