Parking in Cosham
Where to park and how to navigate restrictions
Parking in Cosham is a perennial concern for residents, shoppers and visitors. The High Street is pedestrianised, so there is no parking in the main shopping area itself. The surrounding streets offer on-street parking, but spaces can be tight, particularly during busy shopping periods and at commuter times.
Cosham Railway Station has a car park, which is primarily used by commuters. Spaces are limited and fill up early on weekday mornings, often before eight o'clock. Late-arriving commuters sometimes park in nearby residential streets, which is not always welcomed by local residents. There is no overflow car park.
The larger supermarkets provide the most convenient parking in the area. Tesco Extra has a substantial car park, as does Asda on Havant Road. Both allow free parking for customers doing their shopping, though time limits may apply. Lidl near the station has a smaller car park with limited spaces.
Portsmouth City Council manages parking restrictions in Cosham. Yellow lines are enforced on the main roads, and some residential streets have restricted parking zones to protect residents from commuter and hospital parking. Penalty charge notices are issued for vehicles parked in contravention of the restrictions.
QA Hospital, immediately adjacent to Cosham, generates significant parking demand. Hospital visitors and staff sometimes park in Cosham's residential streets when the hospital car parks are full, causing friction with residents. The hospital has introduced measures to manage its parking, but overflow parking in surrounding streets remains a source of complaint.
For visitors to Portsdown Hill, there are lay-bys and small parking areas along Portsdown Hill Road at the crest of the ridge. These are free and provide access to the viewpoints, the forts and the chalk grassland. They can be busy at weekends, particularly in fine weather.
