Trains from Cosham
Rail services and commuting from the district
Cosham Railway Station is one of the most important stations in the Portsmouth area, sitting at the junction where the lines to Fareham and to Havant diverge. The station is operated by South Western Railway and provides regular services to Portsmouth and Southsea, Portsmouth Harbour, Fareham, Southampton Central and, with changes, London Waterloo.
The station opened in 1848 and has been a key transport hub ever since. Its junction status means that trains from two different directions converge here, giving Cosham better connectivity than most suburban stations. Services to Portsmouth run roughly every fifteen to twenty minutes during the day, with the journey to Portsmouth and Southsea taking about five minutes. Fareham is reached in about ten minutes, and Southampton Central is approximately forty minutes away.
For journeys to London, passengers typically change at Fareham for the direct South Western Railway service to London Waterloo via Eastleigh, Winchester and Basingstoke. The total journey takes about one hour and forty-five minutes to two hours. Alternatively, Southern services from Portsmouth via Horsham reach London Victoria in a similar time.
The station has two platforms connected by a footbridge. Facilities are basic: ticket machines, waiting shelters and a small car park. There is no staffed ticket office, so tickets must be bought from machines, online or via the South Western Railway app. Contactless payment is accepted for tap-in, tap-out journeys.
Cosham station is heavily used by commuters, particularly those working in Portsmouth city centre and at the naval dockyard. The station car park fills up early on weekday mornings, and some commuters park in the surrounding residential streets, which can cause friction with residents. The station's position at the foot of the High Street makes it convenient for the shops and services in the centre.
