Commuting from Cosham

Getting to work by train, bus and car

Cosham is one of the best-connected commuting points in the Portsmouth area. The junction railway station, the A27/A3 interchange and the bus network give residents multiple options for getting to work without depending on a single mode of transport.

The railway station provides direct services to Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton, making Cosham a natural base for anyone working in these cities. The five-minute train journey to Portsmouth and Southsea is particularly convenient, and many Cosham residents commute daily by rail to the dockyard, the city centre or the commercial areas around the harbour. The journey to Southampton takes about forty minutes, making it a viable daily commute.

For London commuters, the journey to Waterloo takes about one hour and forty-five minutes with one change at Fareham. This is long by south-east standards but manageable for those who work remotely part of the week or who are willing to trade commuting time for the lower property prices and the quality of life in the Portsmouth area.

By car, the A3(M) northbound provides fast access to the M25, Guildford and London. The A27 runs east and west along the coast, connecting Cosham to Fareham, Chichester and beyond. The A27/A3 interchange at Cosham is one of the busiest junctions in the area and can be heavily congested at peak times, particularly between 7.30am and 9am and between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

Bus services connect Cosham with QA Hospital, which is one of the largest employers in the area. Many hospital staff live in or near Cosham because of the convenient bus and walking links. The bus also provides a connection to Fareham and Portsmouth city centre for those who prefer not to drive or take the train.

The Park and Ride facility on Portsdown Hill offers another option for drivers heading into the city centre, reducing the need to find parking in the centre of Portsmouth.
