Old Wymering Lane
Street guide, Cosham
A historic lane in the Wymering area, notable as the location of Wymering Manor, the oldest surviving building in Portsmouth. The lane follows an ancient route through what was once a separate hamlet, and its winding course and narrow width reflect its pre-modern origins. Wymering Manor, a grade II* listed building dating from at least the twelfth century, stands on Old Wymering Lane surrounded by later housing. The lane has a distinctive character quite unlike the grid-pattern streets of central Cosham, with an irregular layout and a sense of age. The surrounding area has been built up with interwar and postwar housing, but the lane itself retains something of its rural past. It is a popular spot for local history enthusiasts.
